2 days in Rotterdam

Rotterdam is a famous European city as it is well known for its harbor. However, it is also a travelling destination to be discovered. The city has a modern, artistic and cosy vibe that makes it unique. Located in The Netherlands, it is also near Amsterdam which is perfect if you’re planing to visit both cities. This article will contain my tips for a smooth and enjoyable stay.

CitizenM: This hotel was the reason for our stay in Rotterdam. Indeed, this hotel chain,  which has many locations across the world is well known for their modern system. The rooms are quite small compared to other hotel rooms which makes it even cosier. The bed is set between the two walls of the room, next to the window and is highly confortable. The bathroom is not separated from the rest and is stylish. Netflix  is also available on the tv above the bed and different moods for the room can be chosen via the iPad which controls everything (shutters, lights, tv).

Their breakfast buffet was included in the price and contained many different kinds of tasty food. This hotel matches perfectly with young millennials travelling abroad and especially for couples. You can check out CitizenM here.

Fenix Food Factory: This renovated warehouse is a hidden spot of the city. Located across the river, it is the perfect stop to taste local food. Small restaurants and shops can be found with fresh and tasty food. The place also has a small market to buy fresh meat, fish and cheese. Of course you can grab a coffee or savour a cocktail on their cosy terrace. Anything is possible at Fenix Food Factory.

Sightseeing: Rotterdam does not have many landmarks, however, the city has many museums for those interested. One of the most beautiful place to visit is the Markthal (right picture below) on the main square. This big and modern building contains a food market inside and many food places. The ceiling is also decorated with paintings which makes it even more beautiful.

The cubic houses can be found near the Markthal and are very famous to visit. These yellow wooden homes are shaped in cubes and it is common to see lots of tourists taking pictures of this unusual spot.

If you decide to cross the river, you will end up on the Erasmus bridge, the most known bridge of Rotterdam (left picture below). Bikes can be rented to discover the city the ‘Dutch way’ even though it is not too big to walk.

Dinner in the city center: After a long day of shopping, taking a break around a warm meal feels nice. Plenty of restaurants are located all over the city. The best burgers in town can be found in Hamburg. It works like a traditional fast-food but with table service and more savoury food of course. The staff is very friendly and it is not expensive compared to other places. Another good place is De Beren. This restaurant has different kinds of food such as meat, sandwiches and many more. It is perfect for lunch but also for dinner. De Beren also offers tasty homemade drinks such as limonades and tea.

Since Rotterdam is not a big city, one or two days are enough to visit it which is why this article might be shorter than what you’re used to. However, many beautiful spots are to be found while wandering in the unknown streets. Since Amsterdam is very close, I would recommend that you stop by Rotterdam if you’re planning a trip to the Netherlands. The city has a young and modern vibe that differs from other European cities.
